Who gets to play the guitar riff?
The riff can go anyone in a group of musicians. The bass guitar, the solo guitar, the rhythm guitar and even the keyboardist can bounce a riff around. As in Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” the riff begins with the bass and is progressively joined by lead. The riff in “Iron Man” is probably more recognized than the song itself.
The best part of the song . . .
A guitar riff provides the pulse in the song and can be the easiest part to play. The riff is a great place to start when learning to play guitar and can be very impressive to hear. If you are making your own tunes, a great riff can have you writing the rest of the song around it. In the music biz a riff is considered a “hook.” If you don’t remember anything else about the song, you are like to remember the guitar riff.
